Jaguars Monday camp report: Tempers flare during short yardage, line drills

Mar 31, 2024Mar 31, 2024

The Jacksonville Jaguars practiced for a third day in a row in full pads and high temperatures at the Miller Electric Center on Monday.

Predictably, some of the players got on each other's last nerve.

The most extreme extracurricular incident of camp came during a period when offensive and defensive linemen went against each other in a pass rush/pass protection drill.

Free-agent rookie lineside linebacker D.J. Coleman went against third-year offensive guard Blake Hance, and the rep appeared to be at a standoff when Coleman began throwing punches.

Jaguars offensive line coach Phil Rauscher threw Coleman out of the drill and a few minutes later, veteran tackle Roy Robertson-Harris was seen talking to Coleman.

Earlier in practice, on the second play of a period for short-yardage situations, tight end Brenton Strange was dragged down after catching a pass from Trevor Lawrence. Linebacker Foye Oluokun and safety Rayshawn Jenkins appeared to hit Strange late on the play, precipitating a brief scrum among players on both sides that was quickly quelled.

Weather: Sunny, 82 degrees to start, 89 degrees at the finish.

Duration: Two hours, 35 minutes, full pads.

Injuries: None reported. Wide receiver Jamal Agnew had the wind knocked out of him on one play but was fine; LB Willie Taylor III spent much of practice on an exercise bike. Cornerback Tyson Campbell (concussion protocol) did not practice and offensive guard Tyler Shatley (afib incident last week) participate only in individual drills.

Jaguars had several standouts during the one-on-one period between the offensive and defensive lines.

One of them was rookie defensive lineman Tyler Lacy, who got past guard Cooper Hodges twice during the one-on-one period.

Also standing out were Robertson-Harris and DaVon Hamilton. Robertson-Harris had a good move against Blake Hance and took Walker Little to the ground on another rep.

Third-year outside linebacker K'Lavon Chaisson had a tough day on at least two occasions, getting pancaked by rookie right tackle Anton Harrison and stopped by veteran tackle Cam Robinson.

Though Harrison fared well against Chaisson, he got beat by second-year outside linebacker Travon Walker during the one-on-one period. Harrison is making his way back from a right shoulder injury.

Overall, the offensive linemen appeared to win the majority of the reps against depth players on the defensive line.
